This invention is concerned with a process for recovering substantially pure titanium metal sponge from rutile ore and with apparatus for carrying out the process. Most titanium metal has been produced from its ores by the chlorination of its oxide-like rutile ore, the separation and purification of the TiCI4 produced, the reduction of the TiCI4 to titanium metal by use of an active metal such as magnesium, sodium or calcium, and electrolytically recovering the reducing metal and chlorine, both for recycling. A process for producing titanium metal sponge within a closed cell system which includes an electrolytic anode and an electrolytic cathode, said process including the steps of electrolytic ally decomposing molten magnesium chloride into a molten layer of magnesium metal and chlorine gas, the layer of magnesium metal floating on the magnesium chloride; introducing titanium tetrachloride to the magnesium metal to 45 form titanium metal sponge and magnesium chloride by a reduction reaction, and separating the titanium metal sponge and the magnesium chloride, the process comprising:
